From backyard lawns to airport fields, 11-year-old turns lawn mowing dreams into reality

Eleven-year-old Quentin Hines Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina is not like most kids his age. Your favorite pastime? Mowing other people’s lawns.

Hines began his lawn care journey when he was just 8 years old. Initially, he helped his father, but quickly took over the operation himself.

“I really love it,” Hines said.

He says mowing the lawn makes him feel less stressed and more peaceful. Despite having allergies, he takes medication to continue his passion for mowing lawns.

Two years ago, Hines turned her passion into a business, QJ’s Professional Lawn Care. He acquires new clients by knocking on doors and through his Instagram account, run by his mother.

This summer, Hines plans to expand her business by recruiting some of her fifth-grade classmates. His dedication to lawn care is serious, with high standards set by his parents, Shirley and Quentin Sr., who occasionally work for their son.

There are few breaks for Hines with school during the week and lawn mowing on the weekends. But he has bigger dreams beyond lawn care.

Hines said he would like to work at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, having been fascinated by lawn mowers since he was a child.

“Sometimes when I went there, they would bring out the lawnmowers, so I would like to stay there for a while. My parents would say, ‘It’s time to go,’ but I would say, ‘Just a few more minutes,’ because I I’d like to see them mowing the lawn,” he said.

To his surprise, airport staff organized a special day for Quentin, allowing him to be part of the airfield maintenance crew.

For more than an hour, under the scorching sun of a summer day, Hines lived his dream.

“I’m speechless, speechless,” said his mother. “I know when he was 4, he said, ‘I’m going to get this contract,’ and then today will be the day.”

As if one dream wasn’t enough, Hines also aspired to work on the field staff of a professional sports team. In Charlotte, that meant a surprise visit to the Carolina Panthers’ on-field staff, where he was warmly welcomed and quickly put to work.

Hines’ dedication and passion caught the attention of NFL players, making the experience even more memorable. His meticulous approach impressed the Panthers’ field staff, who taught him how to prepare a football field for practice.

“This is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. In fact, being able to mow the grass at the Charlotte airport, which has always been my dream, made me very happy. Knowing how to do this makes me very happy,” Hines said.

Your ambition and hard work are a lesson to dreamers everywhere: never stop pursuing what you love.
