Photos taken in Havana showed the submarine, identified as Kazan, sailing into the port of the Cuban capital, about 160 kilometers southwest of Key West, Florida.

The U.S. intelligence community has assessed that although the submarine is nuclear-powered, it does not carry nuclear weapons, a U.S. official told CBS News national security correspondent David Martin.

Crowds were seen on land watching small boats following the parade of ships in Havana harbor.

The arrival of the ships coincided with the meeting between Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby told CBS News that the Russians’ time in the Caribbean was not expected to pose a threat to the US.

“Clearly this is them signaling their displeasure with what are we doing for Ukraine” Kirby told CBS News senior White House and political correspondent Ed O’Keefe last week.
