London – Environmental activists sprayed several of the ancient stones at Britain’s iconic Stonehenge site on Wednesday with an orange substance, demanding that the UK’s next government – which will be chosen in a national election on July 5 – ” sign a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels.” fuels by 2030,” said protest group Just Stop Oil.
A video released by the group showed two activists running toward the UNESCO World Heritage site’s prehistoric stones with what appeared to be fire extinguishers and then spraying them with what the group said was “orange paint powder.”
Just Stop Oil said activists “decorated” the stones to draw attention to the “failure of the British government to commit to defending our communities”.
Passers-by intervened to try to stop the activists, and Wiltshire Police later he said two people were arrested, “on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument”.
“Just Stop Oil supporters, along with citizens of Austria, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands and Switzerland, will join the resistance this summer if their own governments do not take significant action,” said a spokesperson for Just Stop Oil. group in a statement.

The protest took place the day before the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, when crowds traditionally gather at Stonehenge to celebrate and watch the rising sun peek through the ancient stones.
“Stonehenge at the solstice is all about celebrating the natural world – but look at the state it’s in! We all have the right to live a life free from suffering, but the continued burning of oil, coal and gas is leading to death and suffering on an unparalleled scale,” said Just Stop Oil. “It’s time to think about what our civilization will leave behind – what is our legacy? Remaining inert for generations works well for rocks – not for climate policy.”
The group has staged a series of protests over the past year, spraying famous works of art with a similar orange substance and even blocking traffic on the main M-25 motorway that encircles London.
